Developing your own routine is critical to your success in your career, relationships, or business. People who have a stellar daily routine tend to get much more done, in less time than those that wing their day or fly by the seat of their pants.
In this post, I will teach you a daily routine hack to help you develop consistency across all areas of your life. The more we routinize our life, the more we can accomplish overall. How do we achieve this? Through tracking our daily activities.
When we track what we do, and how we do it, we become more accountable when we pursue certain activities in our life. It makes us think about what we do differently, than if we did not have a general outline for our day.
Now, I’m not saying you have to pre-plan your day or be super analytical about every little detail, but having a snapshot about what is coming up in your calendar can be very useful.
I’ve been personally using a calendar with all the days of the month on my fridge for the past 2 years, and I can say that my productivity and ability to accomplish my goals has increased 10x.
Writing out my week at a glance gives me motivation going into the next work week, and I also use the side portion of the calendar to write out date ideas for me and my girlfriend, upcoming networking events to attend for work, or additional BIG ideas I have for current projects I am tackling.
Most recently, about 2 months ago, I have started using Google Sheets to create a weekly activity checklist to keep myself on track to achieving my goals. After reading the book, “The ONE THING” by Gary W. Kellar & Jay Papaspan, I learned that setting goals and achieving them is done through setting a small or large goal and working backwards.
When people set goals they need to set a goal and then say, for example, someone wants to attend 1 networking event/week. This is achieved by setting that large goal then saying ok, in 6 months I should have attended 24 networking events to help me land more business for my career. This goal is very specific, has a timeline, and is realistic since that’s only 4 networking events/month.
Tracking these types of activities in a spreadsheet in excel or google sheets helps you see what you need to accomplish DAILY to get to your WEEKLY, MONTHLY, and YEARLY goals. This is what helps people develop a stellar routine, and automate much of their work weeks.
Routinizing your life is the key to increasing consistency, and achieving your short and long-term goals. Routines can become embedded in our subconscious and when they do, they can help free up your mind to create meaningful, long-lasting results.
